Jay Leno is a refreshing character on the US car collection scene, not least because he's pretty serious about his cars.
Looking at his daily late night TV work you'd think he'd be pretty useless as a car critic, trying to be a Jeremy Clarkson style sarky yank, taking the Michael out of various bad motors.
What's refreshing is that he's got access to cars that most of us only see in photographs, and his relationship with BMW is a real surprise.
As Jay himself puts it in today's Sunday Times "I helped BMW to introduce the hydrogen car seven or eight years ago. We did a rather dramatic demonstration where I drove the car up onto a platform. I let it run and put an empty glass under the exhaust pipe. I spoke for about half an hour and when I finished I shut off the car and drank the water that was in the glass. It wasn’t the best-tasting water I’d ever had but it certainly wasn’t bad for me. You can tell people about parts per billion and that kind of stuff, but when they see water come out of a tailpipe and someone drinks it, then it’s a case of, “Okay, thank you, I get it now.”
There's no doubt that in America if you have Leno onboard the serious American petrol-heads take notice.
